Why choose an impact garage door?
- Storm protection for the largest opening in the house, with no panels or braces to set up before a storm.
- Natural light in the garage with windows that are rated, not a weak spot.
- Insurance. An impact-rated garage door (large-missile tested) can be the last piece you need for the opening-protection credit on a wind-mitigation report.
- Resale. Buyers and inspectors in South Florida look for the product approval label.
Which impact garage door styles can I choose?
| Door | Good to know |
|---|---|
| Single or double with a row of impact windows | Light in the garage, most of the door stays solid steel |
| Double with full-view impact glass | A modern look; availability depends on the factory |
| Solid wind-rated steel, no windows | See new garage doors |
What affects the quote for an impact garage door?
- Size of the opening: single (8-9 ft wide) or double (16 ft), and taller-than-standard openings.
- How much glass: a row of impact windows or full-view glass.
- The wind pressure your home requires, which depends on its location and exposure.
- The factory and model, including color and finish.
- Framing repairs, only if we find them when we measure.
How does buying an impact garage door work?
- Call or WhatsApp a photo of your current door and tell us your city.
- On-site visit. We measure, check the framing and the wind rating your home needs, and show you the window and glass options.
- Written quote with the door model, the NOA number and expiry date and the expected timeline, valid 14 days.
- Order and permit. Once you approve, we order the door from the factory, and it is permitted through our general contractor partner. Payment terms are on your written quote.
- Install day: the old door comes out and is hauled away, and the new door goes in with new tracks and springs.
- Final inspection of the permit.
When should I order an impact garage door in South Florida?
The best window is winter and early spring. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, doors are built to order and permits take time. After a named storm, demand jumps and lead times usually grow.
Miami-Dade and Broward are in the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, where garage doors have to be approved products and replacements need a permit. Approvals expire, so we check the NOA when we quote and again when we order, and the number and expiry are on your paperwork.
Not ready for a new door? A hurricane bracing kit adds strength to your current door, though it doesn’t make the door rated.

Common questions
How much is an impact garage door in Miami?
SolvTek Garage Doors quotes every impact door individually, in writing, because the price depends on the size of the opening (single or double, standard or taller), the style, how much glass you want (a row of impact windows or full-view glass), the wind pressure your home requires, and the factory. Every quote includes installation, new tracks and springs, haul-away of the old door and the permit. Call or WhatsApp a photo of your current door and we set up a visit to measure and quote.
What's the difference between an impact door and a wind-rated door?
People use the terms loosely, but for insurance they are different. A wind-rated door passed wind-pressure tests; an impact-rated door also passed large-missile impact tests, and only impact-rated doors count toward the opening-protection credit on a wind-mitigation report. What matters is the door's product approval (a Miami-Dade NOA or Florida Product Approval), which shows the wind pressures it was tested for and how it was tested. A door approved for use here is tested as a complete unit, including any windows, so if you want windows, the glass has to be impact-rated as part of that approval. The NOA number is on your quote so you can check it.
Will an impact garage door help with my insurance?
It can. On a wind-mitigation inspection, the opening-protection credit generally requires every opening, including the garage door, to be protected with impact-rated products (large-missile tested). A door rated only for wind pressure generally neither earns nor removes the credit. If your garage door is the last unrated opening, replacing it may change your rating. Ask your insurance agent how much it changes your premium.
Can I just put impact glass in my current garage door?
Generally no. The glass is approved as part of a specific door, so swapping glass in an existing door doesn't make it rated. To get a rated door with windows, the whole door is replaced.
When should I order an impact garage door in South Florida?
Order in winter or early spring, before hurricane season starts June 1. Doors are made to order and need a permit, so allow for the factory's lead time and the permit turnaround. We give you the expected timeline with your quote.
