A broken torsion spring is the most common reason a garage door won't open. Send a photo of the springs on WhatsApp or call. We replace both springs and size them to your door.
How do I know a garage door spring is broken?
Most people hear it first: a loud bang from the garage, like a firecracker. After that the door won’t lift, or the opener strains and the door only rises a few inches. Look at the bar above the door. If there is a gap in the coil of one spring, it has snapped.
Other signs:
- The opener runs, but the door doesn’t move or stops after a few inches.
- The door feels very heavy, or slams down when you lift it by hand with the opener disconnected.
- A cable hangs loose next to the door, because the spring that kept it tight let go.
How to get a quote
- Send a photo of the springs (from inside, looking up at the bar above the door) on WhatsApp to (561) 724-0724, or call the same number.
- We reply with a written quote for your door, before anyone touches it.
- The technician replaces both springs, sizes them to your door, balances it and runs the auto-reverse test.
If he finds something the photo didn’t show, like a frayed cable or a bent track, he sends you a photo and a quote for it, and nothing extra happens until you approve it.
What affects the quote for a spring repair?
- Torsion or extension springs. Most Miami doors use torsion springs on a bar above the door; older and lighter doors may have extension springs along the tracks.
- One spring or two. Doors built with two springs get both replaced.
- Door size and weight. Wind-rated doors and 18 ft doubles carry more weight, so they need heavier springs.
- What else is worn. Rusted cables, cracked drums or worn rollers are quoted separately, only if you want them done.
Why do garage door springs break sooner in Miami?
Springs are rated in cycles (one open plus one close). Two things shorten that life here:
- Humidity and salt air. Rust on the coils adds friction and creates weak points. Homes near Biscayne Bay, the Intracoastal or the beach see it first, but humid inland garages rust too.
- Heavier, wind-rated doors. Doors built for the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone carry reinforcement that adds weight, so the springs work harder. That is why we size springs to your door instead of using a one-size spring.
A spring that is orange with rust, or a door that no longer stays put halfway up, is a sign to schedule a tune-up before it fails on a weekday morning with the car inside.
Can you quiet the door during the same visit?
Yes. Worn steel rollers make most of the noise. Ask us to quote a set of sealed nylon rollers with your springs, and we do both in the same visit.
We do this work across Miami-Dade and Broward, including Hialeah, Miami Lakes, Doral, Kendall, Westchester, Miramar and Pembroke Pines.

Common questions
How much does it cost to replace a broken garage door spring?
SolvTek Garage Doors quotes every spring replacement individually, in writing, because the price depends on the spring type (torsion or extension), whether the door has one spring or two, the door's size and weight (heavier wind-rated and 18 ft doors need bigger springs), and whether cables or rollers also need work. Send a photo of the springs above the door on WhatsApp or text to (561) 724-0724 and we reply with a written quote before any work.
Why replace both springs if only one broke?
Both springs on a 2-spring door were installed together and have done the same number of cycles. When one snaps, the other is usually close behind. Replacing the pair keeps the door balanced and saves you a second visit. Doors built with one spring get one spring.
Can I open the door with a broken spring?
Please don't. The spring carries the weight of the door, so the opener or your arms end up lifting it, which can strip the opener gear or drop the door. Unplug the opener, leave the door closed, and send us a photo.
Can you replace a broken garage door spring today?
Usually, yes. We work Mon-Sat 7 am-8 pm. Sundays, holidays and after 8 pm: call or WhatsApp to check availability. Either way, the job is quoted upfront. Send a photo of the springs above the door and we confirm the quote and a time.
Do springs wear out faster in Miami?
They can. Humidity and salt air rust the coils, and rust adds friction and weak spots, so springs on coastal and older homes often fail earlier than the cycle rating suggests. A light coat of garage-door lubricant once or twice a year and an annual tune-up help them last.
Can I replace the spring myself?
We don't recommend it. A wound torsion spring stores enough energy to break bones, and the job needs winding bars and the right spring size for your door's weight. Send us a photo instead and you get a written quote, usually within minutes during our hours.
