Most problems, from a stripped gear to misaligned sensors, are fixed in one visit. Send the model sticker and a short video on WhatsApp. If it isn't worth fixing, we tell you first.

What are the signs a garage door opener needs repair?

  • It hums, but the door doesn’t move. Often a stripped drive gear. Check the springs first (see the FAQ below).
  • It clicks or does nothing. A failed logic board, a bad capacitor, or no power reaching the unit.
  • The remote or keypad stopped working but the wall button still works. Usually a programming or receiver problem, sometimes the logic board.
  • The door starts and stops, or reverses before it reaches the floor. Travel limits, force settings or the safety sensors.
  • The light blinks and the door won’t close. The opener is telling you the safety sensors can’t see each other.

How to get a quote

  1. Send a photo of the opener’s model sticker and, if you can, a short video of what it does, on WhatsApp. Or call and describe it.
  2. We tell you the likely fix and send a written quote.
  3. The technician repairs the opener, reprograms your remotes and keypad, sets the travel and force, and runs the auto-reverse test.

If the opener isn’t worth fixing (very old, parts discontinued, or the repair would cost close to a new unit), we say so before you pay anything, and you can ask us to quote a new opener instead.

Why do garage door openers fail so often in Miami?

Storms, power surges and humidity are the usual reasons, because openers here work harder than the brochures assume:

  • Lightning and power surges. Summer thunderstorms and the surge when power comes back after an outage are the most common reasons a logic board dies. A plug-in surge protector rated for the opener is a cheap way to protect the new board.
  • Outages. Without battery backup, an opener does nothing when the power is out, and a wind-rated door is heavy to lift by hand. If yours is old and outages are frequent, a new opener with battery backup may be the better spend.
  • Heat and humidity. Garages in South Florida get very hot and damp in summer, which is hard on plastic gears and electronics. An opener that grinds or slows down in August is telling you the gear is wearing.

Before any opener repair, the technician checks that the door itself is balanced. An opener can’t fix a door with a broken spring or a frayed cable, and forcing it is what strips the gear in the first place.

We do this work across Miami-Dade and Broward, including Hialeah, Miami Lakes, Doral, Kendall, Westchester, Miramar and Pembroke Pines.

Common questions

How much does garage door opener repair cost?

SolvTek Garage Doors quotes every opener repair individually, in writing, because the price depends on what failed (a gear, a logic board, a capacitor, the remotes or the safety sensors), on the opener's brand and age, and on whether parts are still made for it. Send a photo of the opener's model sticker and a short video of what it does on WhatsApp, and we reply with a written quote. If a repair doesn't make sense for your opener, we tell you before any work.

The opener hums but the door doesn't move. What is it?

Check the springs first. If one spring above the door has a gap in the coil, the opener can't lift the door and you need a spring repair, not an opener repair. If the springs look fine, a hum with no movement usually means a stripped drive gear or a failed motor capacitor. Unplug the opener and send us a photo of the springs and the opener's model sticker.

Should I repair my opener or replace it?

Repair usually makes sense when the opener is less than about 10 years old and parts are still made for it. Replacement makes more sense when the opener is older, parts are discontinued, it has no battery backup and you lose power often, or the repair would cost close to a new unit. We can quote both, and we tell you which way we'd go before any work starts.

My opener stopped working after a storm or a power outage. Can you fix it?

Often, yes. Power surges from lightning and the flicker when FPL restores power are common causes of logic board failures here. First check the outlet, the breaker and the GFCI outlet in the garage. If the opener still has no lights, send us the model sticker and we reply with a quote.

Why does my door go down and then go back up?

That is the safety system doing its job. Usually the photo-eye sensors near the floor are dirty, blocked or knocked out of line, or the close force is set wrong. Wipe both lenses and check that both sensor lights are steady. If it still reverses, send us a short video and we quote the sensor repair or realignment.
