When is it time for a new garage door opener?

  • The opener is old, loud, and the repair parts are no longer made.
  • A repair would cost close to what a new unit does.
  • You lose power often and your current opener has no battery backup.
  • You want to open and check the door from your phone.
  • You are replacing the door and want a matching, quieter opener.

Which garage door opener should I choose?

For most homes, a belt drive with battery backup and Wi-Fi. Here are our three openers in plain words:

Opener Best for
Chain drive The most affordable option. Strong and simple, but the loudest. Fine for a detached garage.
Belt drive with battery backup and Wi-Fi Most homes. Quiet, works during outages, app control.
Wall-mount jackshaft (LiftMaster 8500W) High or crowded ceilings, storage racks, car lifts. Mounts beside the door.

How does a garage door opener installation work?

  1. You send a photo of the garage ceiling and the current opener on WhatsApp or by text, or call. We tell you which opener fits and send a written quote.
  2. The technician checks the door’s balance and springs first.
  3. He installs the opener, rail and wall button, installs and aligns the safety sensors, sets travel and force, and programs your remotes, keypad and Wi-Fi.
  4. He runs the auto-reverse test and shows you how to use the manual release in an outage.

Why does battery backup matter in South Florida?

After a hurricane or even a summer thunderstorm, power can be out for hours or days. A wind-rated door is heavier than a standard one, and lifting it by hand every time you need the car is no fun. Battery backup keeps the opener working for a limited number of cycles while the power is out, and the Wi-Fi app lets you confirm the door is closed if you evacuated.

Common questions

How much does a new garage door opener cost installed?

SolvTek Garage Doors quotes every opener installation individually, in writing, and the type matters most: a chain drive is the most affordable, a quiet belt drive with battery backup and Wi-Fi costs more, and a wall-mount jackshaft (LiftMaster 8500W) is the premium option. Ceiling height, extra remotes or keypads, and whether the door needs spring or cable work first also change the quote. Send a photo of the garage ceiling and your current opener on WhatsApp, and we reply with a written quote that includes the unit, installation and programming.

Do I need battery backup on a garage door opener in South Florida?

In South Florida we recommend it. When the power goes out in a storm, an opener without a battery does nothing and you have to lift the door by hand with the manual release. A battery backup lets the opener run a limited number of cycles during an outage, which is usually enough to get the car out and back in.

Chain, belt or jackshaft: which garage door opener should I get?

Chain drives are the most affordable and very durable, but louder. Belt drives are much quieter, which matters if there is a bedroom over or next to the garage, as in many townhomes. A jackshaft mounts on the wall next to the door, frees up the ceiling for storage or a car lift, and works well with high or unusual ceilings. Send us a photo of the garage ceiling and we tell you which fits.

Will a new opener fix a door that is hard to open?

No. If the door is heavy or uneven when you lift it by hand, the springs or cables need attention first, and a new opener would wear out quickly. The technician checks the door's balance before installing, and if it needs work he sends you a photo and a quote before doing anything.

Can I control the new opener from my phone?

Yes, on the Wi-Fi models. We connect it to your home Wi-Fi during the visit so you can open, close and check the door from the app, which is handy if you evacuate for a storm or leave for the summer.
